Fire Safety and Emergency Evacuation Policy
Policy Statement
We ensure our premises present no risk of fire by ensuring the highest possible standard of fire precautions. The Manager/Acting Manager and staff are familiar with the current legal requirements. Where necessary we seek the advice of a competent person, such as our Fire Warden (Michelle French) or advice from the Health and Safety Executive.
Procedures
- The basis of fire safety is risk assessment.
- The Manager/Deputy Manager and Health and Safety Advisor’s have received training in fire safety sufficient to be competent to carry out a written risk assessment. This follows the guidance as set out in the Fire Safety Risk Assessment – Educational Premises document.
- We have a copy of the fire safety risk assessment that applies to the building (5.5a) and we will contribute to regular reviews.
- Fire alarm systems are checked at the start of each week and an annual safety check will be undertaken by the landlord of the premises (City York Council), in the case of the Boddler group this will be the Recreation Hall Management Committee
- Fire doors are clearly marked, never obstructed and easily opened from the inside.
- Smoke detectors/alarms and firefighting appliances conform to BSEN standards, are fitted in appropriate high risk areas of the building and are checked as specified by the manufacturer.
Our emergency evacuation procedures are approved by the Fire Wardens and Health & Safety Advisor and are:
- Clearly displayed on the inside of the front door of the premises
- Explained to new members of staff, volunteers and parents; and practised regularly at least once every half term.
Emergency Evacuation Procedures:
- In case of a fire the children will be led out of the premises/grounds by the nearest available exit (situated at front and back) to the fire muster points.
- The register, emergency contact details and visitor books are taken to the muster point, to ensure that all children and adults will be accounted for.
- The Emergency Services will be called
- No one will be allowed to enter the premises until the emergency services deem it is safe to do so
- Practice drills will be held at least once every half term to ensure children are familiar with the sound of the alarm and parents/children and staff know where the fire exits are.
- Lead supervisor will be responsible for taking a head count and roll call of children and adults present
- Length of time taken to evacuate the building will be recorded
- The Manager/Senior supervisor will designate a staff member to call the emergency services
- Parents will be contacted by mobile phone to collect their children (Pre-school, extended school provision only)
- Staff will stay with children until they are collected by their parents or a person nominated on the registration form. (Pre-school, extended school provision only)
The fire drill record will contain:
- Date
- Time
- How long it took to evacuate
- Whether there were any problems that delayed evacuation and what these were
- Any further action taken to improve the drill procedure
- Who carried out the drill
Legal framework
- Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
These procedures refer to both provision in the bungalow and in the Wigginton Recreation Hall
