Social Networking Policy

Policy Statement

This policy is in place to outline the acceptable use of social media in connection with The Wonder Years. This policy applies to all members of staff, committee members, volunteers, student helpers or anyone who has a connection in a non-employee capacity with The Wonder Years.

Procedures

This policy applies to any equipment from which social media platforms can be accessed including, but not exclusive to, personal computers, laptops, smart phones and watches.

When we refer to ‘social media’ this applies to any website where you can publicly post a comment, and includes:

Wherever and whenever we use social media (with any connection to The Wonder Years) we need to be aware of our responsibilities to the setting, those who work here, families, committee members, volunteers and the community in which we operate.

Three simple golden rules of using social media…

  1. If you wouldn’t say it in person directly or indirectly, don’t say it online.
  2. If you see something about The Wonder Years online that you think should be responded to, or you are concerned about, raise it with the Manager or the Chair of the Committee.
  3. If you want to talk about The Wonder Years, ensure that you follow the guidance offered in this policy, using the appropriate forums and, if unsure, don’t post!

Our Social Media Policy

The use of Social Media in relation to The Wonder Years

Conversations posted on social networking sites can end up being seen by millions of people. Any comments you make on external sites, which are public, that relate to, or reflect on any element of The Wonder Years, can be visible to members of staff, parents/carers of children who attend the setting or other members of the community.

Remember that social networking sites are not confidential. Once a comment is made, it’s very difficult to completely withdraw or delete it, so you must think carefully about what would happen if your comments aimed at friends and/or family members were forwarded to others out of your control.

Whether you are immediately identifiable as someone associated with The Wonder Years from your profile or not, people reading your posts could assume you are talking on behalf of the setting and therefore you are responsible for what you write about. This includes the re-posting or re-tweeting of comments made by others that may contain inappropriate material.

When discussing anything related to The Wonder Years (such as fund raising events), you must do this in the same professional way that you would if you were at work speaking on behalf of your employer.

We recognise that many individuals associated with the setting do use social media in a personal capacity. With respect for the right to individual privacy, we must ensure that the reputation of The Wonder Years and our confidentiality is maintained. Social networking sites are subject to legal disclosure therefore it is important that any sensitive, confidential or legislated information is not disclosed to prevent:

What to do in the event of inappropriate comments, postings regarding The Wonder Years

If you see something about The Wonder Years online that you think should be responded to, or you are concerned about, raise it with the Manager or the Chair of the Committee.

Examples may include:

Acting as an Ambassador for The Wonder Years

We recognise the benefits of utilising social media to advertise and promote events arranged by the setting and therefore, we request that any social media reference includes the following information only:

  1.   Name of event
  2.   Date, time and venue
  3.   Short synopsis about the event and where applicable, contact details for further information

If you are unsure about the suitability of using social media in any advertising/promoting capacity, please refer to the Manager or the Chair of the Committee.

Failure to comply with the contents of this policy may lead to disciplinary action in line with the setting’s disciplinary procedures / disassociation with The Wonder Years organisation and/or removal from The Wonder Years Committee.
