Sun Protection Policy
At The Wonder Years we understand that children and adults need opportunities to go outside into the sunshine for their health and enjoyment. We want all children and adults to enjoy the sun safely and we will work with staff and parent/carers to achieve this through:
Learning
- We will engage the children in group discussion times on sun safety.
- We will show the children how to apply cream to their skin and encourage them to be independent in this.
Protection
- There is a sun awning attached to the rear of the main building and a pergola at the end of the garden which are used to provide a shaded area
- Activities will be placed in the shady areas of the garden where possible
- Staff will remain aware of their responsibility to protect the children from harm from the sun’s rays and the effect of heat.
- Staff will actively encourage children to move into shady areas when the sun is high
- Children will be encouraged to bring a filled drink bottle for use in the garden area
- Children will have continuous access to drinking water
Clothing
- All children (and staff) are encouraged to bring and wear a hat when playing outside on warm or sunny days
Sunscreen
- Permission to apply sunscreen is asked for on the child’s registration form
- Factor 50 sunscreen is available for children who are not able to bring in their own
- Factor 50 sunscreen is available before the start of sessions for parents to apply to their children and a form to complete if their child has had sunscreen applied
- Children attending all day will have sunscreen reapplied at regular intervals
- Parents/carers will be encouraged to apply sunscreen before their child attends each day.
